ST: Happy Monday lovely readers! We are thrilled to kick of the week with a lovely dose of color courtesy of Eden Passante, the beauty and brains behind Sugar and Charm. Welcome Eden! Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background.
EP: I grew up in a tiny, coastal northern California town and moved to Los Angeles a few days after my 18th birthday! It was daunting at first, but I pushed through and it’s been 12 years now! I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from Cal State University Northridge and in 2010 started an event design company, Sugar and Charm, which led to blogging full time!
ST: Did you always love to entertain? And if so, tell us about your very first party.
EP: I truly have always loved to entertain and had a passion for creativity. Hours upon hours of my childhood were spent taking drawing classes, making crafts and clay sculptures, cake decorating, baking, throwing parties, and decorating (and redecorating) my room! I’ve taken every art and home economics class you can imagine. Ha! All of that practice helped me to be the entertainer I am today. There’s an art to throwing a good party and being an awesome host. I should wait to share those tips in a book, haha!!
I don’t remember the first party I ever threw… must’ve not been that memorable! But one of my favorite parties I’ve ever thrown was last year for my client, International Delight. It was a “recharge” party and we had different stations set up for nails, hair, crafts, as well as food and cocktails. People wrote me afterwards saying it was the best party they’ve ever been to!! I was so honored! You can see that party here: http://sugarandcharm.com/2015/07/recharge-party-with-indelight.html/.
ST: Your styling and photographs are GORGEOUS! Do you have any formal training or are you self taught?
EP: Thank you so much! My husband is really the one to thank here! He taught me everything I know about taking photos and he shoots all of our travel pictures or any major campaigns we’re doing. I’ve learned by watching him and asking many, many questions!! I do all of the photo editing in Lightroom and then bring the pics into Photoshop for final touches if need be. It’s a process for sure!! I learned styling by endless trial and error and gaining inspiration from magazines and stylists I admire. There was definitely a lot of mistakes made and I’m still growing with every new shoot.
ST: What is your dream project?
EP: I’ve been SO lucky to have already worked with some of my dream brand partners!! From travel to entertaining, I feel like many of my dream projects have happened! My dream project now is to work with companies while we build and remodel our house and barn studio! That’s been a dream for awhile.
ST: As a girl who loves to entertain, your Instagram feed gives me all kinds of inspiration for upcoming events. Whose work inspires you?
EP: Thanks!! Of course, as most entertainers in the industry, I look up to Martha Stewart and her team! I also follow a lot of food blogs, florists and bakers for inspiration too. I always turn to magazines as well. I will ALWAYS love reading a traditional paper magazine! I enjoy the tactile feel of flipping the pages! I like Sunset, Martha Stewart, LA Magazine, Garden and Gun, Country Living, etc.
